37th Annual Magnolia 5K Road Race and 1K Fun Run

The 37th Annual Magnolia 5k Road Race and 1k Fun Run is the official kick off to the Magnolia Library Center’s 125th anniversary celebration. 8:30 a.m. (1k Fun Run) followed by the 9 a.m. 5k race. The race is moving from a Thursday to a Saturday this year to tie in to the anniversary celebration. This certified 5k course is lined with spectators, loops around the shore, and is chock full of gorgeous ocean views (and breezes!)

The second annual Gloucester Blues Festival takes place Saturday, August 10th at Stage Fort Park on the waterfront.  This year's festival features blues greats: Tommy Castro and the Painkillers, Ana Popovic, Biscuit Miller, Johnny Rawls, Anthony Gomes, Lydia Warren and Gracie Curran and the High Falutin' Band.  Sorry, no pets, no coolers, no sun umbrellas.  Food and beverages are available on site - no carry-ins.  Rain or shine.  Gates open at 9:00 am.

Cape Ann Artisans 2013 Spring Studio Tour June 22 & 23, 2013 Cape Ann is home to a thriving arts community, one of the oldest in the country. For thirty years Cape Ann Artisans has been inviting the public to visit their studios during their Open studio weekends. This year’s spring tour will be held June 22nd and 23rd from 10 am to 5 pm each day. The self-guided tour along the scenic coastline of Gloucester and Rockport presents a unique opportunity to meet 26 professional artists and see their work in the setting in which it was created. The work represented includes: pottery, painting, sculpture, photography, mosaics, jewelry, hand-made glass beads, and weaving, and block printing. Several of the artists will be demonstrating their working process during the tours. ?The members of Cape Ann Artisans, while diverse in our art and expression, share a common sense of place on Cape Ann. Whether we were born and raised in the area, left and returned from other places, or found Cape Ann later in life, we draw our aesthetics and our inspiration directly from the color, light, and vistas of our environment.??Brochures with route maps will be available at the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce, the Rockport Information Booth on Rte 127 and at each of the artisans. Proceeds from the event benefit the Semper Fi Fund, a non-profit who provides financial assistance and quality of life solutions to Marines and Sailors injured in post-9/11combat, training, or life-threatening illnesses, and their families. Semper Fi Fund also helps Soldiers and other service members injured while in support of Marines.  100% of your ticket price will be donated to the charity.

 

The evening will include:

• Fine art exhibition from Thi Linh Wernau's "You. Are. Beautiful." project, featuring five veterans
• Short talk by the artist and veterans
• Amazing pop covers by the talented Boston-based musician and violinist, Rhett Price
• Complimentary appetizers / hors d'oeuvres
• 10% of all other food and drink sales donated to charity
• Cash bar
• Raffle prizes
• NOTE: guests can also choose to eat dinner on the LAT 43 side of the restaurant; however, bring your event ticket so that a portion of your meal can be donated to the Semper Fi Fund.

Mark Godfried Memorial Tag A Tiny Tuna Tournament 2013 Banquet

The Mark Godfried Memorial Tag A Tiny™ Bluefin Tournament has been established to honor a great advocate for Bluefin science and to raise funds for continued Bluefin research.  The Large Pelagics Research Center (LPRC), under the direction of Dr. Molly Lutcavage, is a premiere research program, focused on tunas and billfish.  Based at the UMass Marine Station, Gloucester, MA, LPRC, with its tagging program, has helped identify migration routes, growth patterns, and potential spawning areas of Bluefin tuna. The tournament raises research funds to support the LPRC’s scientific investigations. Mark Godfried was a great friend and supporter of the Large Pelagics Research Center’s Bluefin research. His knowledge and passion for the species was only exceeded by his dedication to the Gloucester fishing industry. 

The banquet dinner to honor the tournament winners will be held on July 14th, 2013 at the Gloucester House Restaurant in Gloucester, MA. The event will feature entertainment, food and a silent auction. It is open to the public. 

Your fee to attend this great event will be donated in full to The Large Pelagic Research Center in Mark's honor. We look forward to seeing you there!
